The installation of the French post office in the French consulate in Panama made it possible to set up a French shipping connection from Panama and Callao in Peru. The book contains numerous, partly colored illustrations of old views of the town, maps, the stamps used and all known letters from the period 1843-48. In addition, old documents from the archives are printed that concern mail delivery and postal rates. The appendix also contains the timetables for the French ships. France thus had its own shipping connection to the west coast of South America as an alternative to the British Pacific Steam Navigation Company, which was founded in Lindon in 1838.
