Description
Helbig, Dr. J., Postal markings on letters from the 15th to the 18th century. New views on the postal history of the early modern period and the city of Nuremberg, 2010, hardcover, 113 pages and 165 plates with hundreds of illustrations. The basis for the publication was the discovery of an archive of scholars' letters from the 16th to the 18th centuries in the University Library of Erlangen. This is the largest collection of such letters in the German-speaking world. From the author's advance notice: The aim of the book is twofold: 1. Reassessment and critical examination of previous views on the postal history of the early modern period. The development of the postal service in Italy, France, England and in the Empire is examined, taking into account the Taxis, urban and princely posts. 2. Thanks to an enormously important archive discovery, over 19,000 letters from the 16th to 18th centuries have been processed from scholarly correspondence, which provide completely new insights into the specific postal situation. These letters contain all the postal markings that we know of in their further development up to the 19th century in their initial and original context. The most important letters in this collection that have been treated postally are illustrated and discussed on over 150 plates. It is precisely these letters that provide insights into the point of reassessing the postal situation that could not be captured by previous archive studies and put some things in a different light. #56917
